The iconic Dunedin Railway Station.
The sun shone bright over Dunedin as train enthusiasts, locals and guests gathered at the historic Dunedin Railway Station to celebrate a monumental day for the city and its cherished Taieri Gorge scenic train journey. After years of closure and restoration efforts, the full tracks through to Pukerangi officially reopened in late October this year, marking a new chapter for one of New Zealand’s most iconic rail journeys.
The Taieri Gorge railways carriages.
The atmosphere was electric as the Taieri Gorge train, a vibrant symbol of Dunedin’s heritage, pulled out of the station. Alongside the rhythmic clatter of the wheels, passengers enjoyed views of the city and the first of many tunnels before the train weaved through the pines and into the dramatic scenery of the gorge.
The train’s first stop for the day in Hindon.
The train’s first stop for reopening day was Hindon, a picturesque location nestled in the heart of the Gorge. Here, passengers were treated to an official ceremony that combined tradition and celebration.
A karakia set the tone for the day, honouring the land, people, and journey ahead. Followed by a ribbon-cutting by the train itself, symbolising not only the reopening of the tracks but the reconnection of the communities, efforts by the team and histories tied to the railway.
