About this Summer in Dunedin…

Filled with dazzling sunny days and glamorous cruise ships full of keen visitors, this Summer in Dunedin was superb for shining the light on our beautiful city in the South Island.

We took advantage of the long days of light on a mission to visit iconic landscapes and must-do destinations and venture out to discover more of the locally made products, services and hospitality that Dunedin has to offer.

We had warm waters (and even sparkling skies!) and aren't quite ready to say goodbye to the tropical and gleaming Dunedin that we've experienced this year so far.

We're revisiting some of our favourite moments from the past Summer and we think you should come along with us...

  1. Tunnel Beach

After descending the steps of the hand-carved rock tunnel to Dunedin’s iconic Tunnel Beach, we took the time to enjoy the surroundings of the dramatic sandstone coastline and explore the tunnel built in the 1870s!

Low tide gave the best access to the beach and gave us more time to enjoy the hidden beach before a bit of challenge in the sun on the steep walking track back up to the car park!

2. The Corner Store

We stopped into The Corner Store Cafe for some mouth-watering all-day breakfast options and save-for-later takeaway meals to hit the spot in our belly before hitting the road on our ventures for the day!

Located on the corner of Bath & Stuart street, at 134 Stuart street, Dunedin, The Corner Store trades seven days a week, offers daily baked goods and brews organic (and delicious) fair-trade coffee from local coffee roasters @commongroundespresso!

3. Volta

Located in the heart of Ōtepoti, we visited Volta - A hybrid studio, gallery and retail space.

Focusing on consciously produced artisan jewellery, Volta provides a space for emerging artists and designers to showcase their work and is a great place to find locally made, one-of-a-kind gifts and unique and personal pieces for yourself.

Volta currently stocks work from over a dozen artists, with the majority hailing from Dunedin! With numbers expected to grow in the future, plans to hold workshops, exhibitions and other special events as the space continues to evolve!

4. Lochend Woolshed

Only minutes from the city centre, Lochend is a unique property, surrounded by native bush, lagoons, 100-year-old trees, incredible views and wildlife. “Where timeless beauty meets rustic charm” Lochend Woolshed offers a stunning setting for weddings and special events.

The triple-brick Woolshed started as a cow byre and dairy!

And has since been lovingly restored into timeless beauty, and claimed the very special awards for ’Outstanding Wedding Reception Venue’ and ‘WIANZ 2022 Supreme Award Winner’ at the Wedding Industry Awards New Zealand 2022!

With too many fabulous local businesses and destinations to count, Dunedin has so much to offer and share with the locals, visitors and travellers to and from the city!

We've given ourselves a mission of creating a valuable resource to spotlight local businesses and can't wait to see what the next season brings as we continue to expand our platforms, network and community.

  • The Dunedin Essential.
